Fleet Week New York, now in its 31st year, is a celebration to honor the members of the United States Navy, Coast Guard and Marine Corps. It is an unparalleled opportunity for the public to meet Sailors, Marines and Coast Guardsmen, as well as witness firsthand the latest capabilities of today’s maritime services. The weeklong celebration has been held nearly every year since 1984. Fleet Week kicks off with the Parade of ships and continues with military demonstrations, a Memorial Day ceremony and more outstanding things to do around town.

The biggest ship in town this year is the USS New York (LPD-21). It is the fifth ship in the San Antonio-class amphibious transport dock, and the sixth ship of the USS Navy to be named after the Great State of New York. The USS New York is state of the art and built by Northrop Grumman Ship Systems of New Orleans, Louisiana. The contract was awarded in 2003 and she was christened on March 01, 2008 at Avondale Shipyards in New Orleans by the former Secretary of the Navy, Gordon England’s wife and ships sponsor Dotty England.
