Fleet Week, NYC 2004

Fleet Week, NYC  2004. A great event  highlights the pride, professionalism and spirit of our nation’s sea services. Over 3,500 Sailors and Marines, as well as ten Navy ships have participated. As with previous years, ships will be berthed at both Pier 88 in Manhattan and the Stapleton Pier at the Staten Island Homeport. While in New York City, Sailors and Marines will be participating in Memorial Day parades in all five boroughs, volunteering with local community outreach   organizations, and enjoying the sites, sounds, and hospitality of New York City. The public is invited to tour some of the ships, as well as view military demonstrations and crew competitions. The event is awesome! We had a great time out there.

Ship tour: USS Iwo Jima (LHD 7)

History: USS Iwo Jima is the seventh WASP-class Amphibious Assault Ship and the second ship in the Navy to bear the name. The IWO JIMA is also the Navy's third Amphibious Assault Ship designed and built from the keel up with accommodations for female sailors.

This ship is truly remarkable. We were really impressed to see all the equipment, and to hear about how all this stuff works. We especially liked the flight deck and all the aircraft / vehicles.  It was nice seeing how our tax dollars work so well.

Ship Tour: USS ANZIO (CG-68)

History: USS ANZIO is the twenty-second vessel in the TICONDEROGA class of Aegis cruisers and the fifteenth built by Ingalls Shipbuilding in Pascagoula, MS. USS ANZIO Is prepared to conduct prompt, sustained combat operations at sea in support of carrier strike groups, surface strike groups, expeditionary strike groups, and as a traditional maritime interdiction forces. She can defeat hostile surface ships, submarines, and air forces simultaneously, while delivering long range offensive land attacks.

We were impressed by the big guns, torpedoes, and the other powerful weapons of the ship.
