A Trip to Museum of American Armor, Plainview, New York

In September 2019, Specwargear.com got a chance to visit the Museum of American Armor located at Plainview, New York. Located with the rolling grounds of Old Bethpage Village Restoration, Old Bethpage, New York, the Museum of American Armor is a 25,000 square foot facility featuring 40 operational tanks and armor vehicles to create a military armored column that replicates the sights and sounds of American forces during World War II, offering a compelling educational tool in telling the seminal story of American courage, valor and sacrifice.

As per the museum article, Lawrence Kadish, Chairman and founder of the Museum of American Armor, stated, “Seeing these vehicles cross an open field as Airpower’s vintage fighters fly overhead recreates a moment in time that allows us to begin to appreciate what was required by our grandfathers to defeat an evil that even today we cannot fully comprehend. Our goal is to bring the sights and sounds of American history to a new generation and thereby pay tribute to those who defended our freedoms.”

Exhibits include an iconic M4 Sherman tank, a German Tiger Tank, a M60 medium tank, a M18 Hellcat tank, a M48 Patton tank, a M5 Stuart tank, a M42 Duster tank, a potent 155 mm howitzer, various Jeeps, reconnaissance armored vehicles, M3 Scout cars, high speed tractors, a classic Lasalle Naval staff car, a quad .50 caliber machine gun battery, anti-aircraft guns, machines guns, small arms, and etc. Many vehicles are still operational and will display on field in special events. Multimedia displays will augment the display of vehicles and visitors will be able to see tanks under repair and restoration. The museum is open year around, Wednesday through Sunday, between 10:00 am and 4:00 pm. If you ever get to go down to New York, be sure to visit the Museum of American Armor.
